$100 Million Donation to NYPL

Look what I saw in the New York Times. How nice. Funny, I work there, and yet did not hear about this before I saw the NYT story. Would it kill them to tell the staff before the general public?

And really, a cafe in Astor Hall? Do they have any idea how echo-y it is in there?

No, NYPL doesn't tell anyone anything. The PTB much prefer to let rumors run free. Many of us figured months ago that Mid-Manhattan was being sold and SIBL might be next. Maybe 42nd Street a circulating library makes sense (It used to have Literature and Language, the Popular Library, and the Picture Collection), and using all those stacks for public space is a nice idea, too, now that remote storage exists for things that won't fit the stacks under Bryant Park.

So far, all the rumors I've heard have been right. I can't wait to see what's next?

Well, I heard some of the rumors too, though less than most people, since my branch was in the pilot program and we don't get visitors anymore. And I agree having a circulating library in HSSL would be great (and does that guy realize that NO ONE is going to call that building by his name, except in official communications?).

It just irks me that NYPL thinks so little of its employees that they can't be bothered to tell us things before issuing a press release. Seriously, ONE DAY in advance would have made me pretty damn happy.

Yeah, a staff-wide email a day in advance would've been nice.
