laziness

You know, it seems like an entire day off would leave you plenty of time to relax, and yet still get a lot accomplished.

Yet, inevitably, at the end of my day off, I have done absolutely nothing useful.

In my defense, yesterday was bitter cold, and there was no way I was humping laundry to the laundry room. That does not excuse the lack of cleaning, exercising, call-making, etc.

Snow!

It's snowing here in the Bronx! So pretty!

Of course, I'm madly hoping it doesn't stick, because I don't want to drive home amongst lunatics, and that if it does, there isn't much, because I don't want to dig my car out tomorrow. And Rich is probably cursing up in Valhalla.

But for now, Snow! Pretty!

When I got to work today (at a branch not my own), the internet was down. On the public computers, even on the staff computers. And of course that meant no patrons were actually in the branch - as soon as they found out there was no internet, they turned around and left. It was looking to be an extremely boring day. I actually weeded their reference section - removing all the stuff they obtained when they opened in 1973! Seriously, anything older than me has to go, I don't care if the content isn't out of date (yes it can happen - religious reference, literary analysis, etc.).

But thankfully, just as I left for lunch, the problem was fixed. Yay for ITG!

Today I officially started with traditional New Year's activities - namely, exercise. But at least I have not wasted my money on a membership I won't use or anything - no, I went looking for machines on eBay, and was lucky enough to find an elliptical machine for sale near me, that no one else bid on. Total cost, $1, plus gas. Not bad!

I don't make resolutions anymore, since they seemed destined to fail, but I've been trying to make myself exercise for months. And usually machines on eBay go for a lot more.

I had a lovely start to the new year, how about everyone else? We managed to turn on the TV at 20 'til, but managed to mostly miss the big countdown. Still, we were awake and together, so that's a pretty good start.

tree!

I have a tree! Ok, we have a tree. For the first time in at least  three years, we put up a Christmas tree,  and I am just so happy to see all my ornaments again.

We had Rich's mom over last night and she and I set up the newly purchased fake tree, and hung all the ornaments. Rich pointed out bare spots from across the room. And hung the stuff at the very top.

I forgot how nice it is to come into a room and see a Christmas tree. Now I just need a good picture.

Most of my shopping is done, but I have 3 remaining. In an emergency, I can get my brothers gift cards, but I prefer actual presents. So, what can I get for:

1) a recent college grad working in the DC area (younger brother)

2) a guy in his late 20s with a new baby (middle brother)

3) a very active woman close to 90 years old with an entire house filled with stuff (grandmother)

help?

'Jerry-Rigged' Policy Opens Door For Pagan Proselytizing In Virginia Public School:
A group of Pagans in Albemarle County, Va., was recently given permission to advertise their multi-cultural holiday program to public school children – and they have the Rev. Jerry Falwell to thank for it.
Oh, my. I'm going to be giggling all day. Such glorious irony.

Boy, nothing can pick up your mood like new shoes. Check 'em out:Pretty shoes )

I know you're not supposed to buy yourself anything right before Christmas, but it's not like anyone would be buying me shoes.

Rich gives me this look every time I say it (since he works outdoors now), but the weather needs to cool off already! I just can't get in the mood to do holiday shopping if it's not cold. It seems like it's not time yet or something.

So, sorry honey, but I'm happy there's a cold front coming through today. And I want to wear my sweaters, dammit!

I feel like I got a lot done today, which was my day off. Unfortunately, I don't feel particularly relaxed. Oh, well.

Anyway, now that the bar cabinet is finally fixed, I was able to put all the crystal in it. I can finally use my crystal, for the first time since the wedding!

That cleared out a lot of room in the storage closet, which I then refilled with all the boxes sitting in the guest room. And I reorganized the closet in there, so it's back to looking like a guest room and not a storage room.

And I got myself off a lot of catalog mailing lists, and went grocery shipping, and mailed off a bunch of books for my new favorite site, paperbackswap.com. And did some cleaning and ironing.

As I said, a productive day. Just felt like sharing.

According to this, I am this type:

  • Abides by the rules
  • Great follower
  • Does not like too much attention
  • A little self-conscious
  • Somewhat reserved
  • Likes a schedule
  • May occasionally color hair to attract attention
  • This is weirdly accurate. Try it!

I have seen this too many times lately - I can't hold it in anymore.

You graduate FROM college, people. FROM. It is not a transitive verb. And frankly, if you did (graduate from college), you should know that.

So, the next person who utters the phrase "graduate[d] college" (or high school, or any other school) in my presence is going to be strangled by a crazy woman. Fair warning.

Amusing news story of the day:

After splitting with Kevin Federline, Britney Spears is returning to a working relationship with Larry Rudolph, the entertainment lawyer who discovered her at age 13 and managed her into pop stardom. Spears fired Rudolph the day she married Federline, reportedly because Rudolph insisted she sign a prenup. (N.Y. Daily News)

I guess she realized he did have her best interests in mind.

I'm wearing my vampire teeth to work today. Along with a lot of black, heavy eye makeup, dark red lips and no blush. I'm going for a subtle, modern vampire.

So far, everyone is pretty amused. I can't wait until the kids get here.

I showed up on time for work, promptly at 10.

Unfortunately, I was scheduled 12-8. Dammit. At least I got some errands done which might otherwise have waited several days (since I never feel like doing them after work).

"Ugly Betty" star America Ferrera on what passes for curves in Hollywood: "I think it's hilarious when magazines call Jessica Alba or Eva Longoria curvy. Come on. They're not curvy, they're small -- I'm curvy!" (from Perez Hilton, via Salon).

That's right - you can't be skinny and curvy - leave one good adjective for us!

I'm in a sharing mood lately.

I heard a song this morning on my mp3 player that always touches me, and since it's by a guy almost no one has heard of, I thought I'd share. The song is called "Arnie", by Robbie Schaeffer, and the chorus goes:

I've got a roof above my head,
and I've got food to eat.
The children are kept safe at night
    when they lay to sleep.
    And I'll never be famous,
but my best friend is my wife.
And boy, that's the way to live your life.

It's a very slow, introspective song, almost no accompaniment, and it just gets me every time.

    It's official.

I have a sick, sick, sense of humor.

Showtime has put the pilot of Dexter online (ooh! they just added #2!), and I watched it last night, and I love it.

If you've never heard of it, it's about a guy who works as a blood-spatter analyst for the police. And on his own time, he's a serial killer who only goes after people who deserve it (in the first episode, he kills a guy who kidnapped a suburban mom to make a snuff film).

He's got his own dry humor. Which I enjoy. Which makes me a sick puppy.

For the rest of you out there, enjoy the link.

OK, this weekend I deleted all the cool-looking CSS and HTML from Myspace, making it just the generic page with a link to the good one, and now I'm getting messages from strangers. 4 today. After getting none for months. Why is that? Is there a link posted somewhere? And why on Earth would there be more interest in the boring version of the page than the good one?

    Weird.

My computer is back and working! So happy!

However, I am definitely going to need the dock for it at some point - though I need to remember the option of my compact USB keyboard when I'm on the couch and want to answer email or something (it's a slate - no built-in keyboard, and so far character recognition sucks).

Next, I need to see how to train the handwriting recognition. Tomorrow's my day off, so I guess I'll be working on that then.

After I finish at least one of the current library book stack next to the TV. Minimum.
