Lifehacker used my script. I got mentioned in a Lifehacker post. I feel famous! OK, in a little, weird corner of the internet, but still!
for the impatient book-lover
Mar. 18th, 2008 12:45 pmI love Amazon. I do. I've probably been shopping there for more than 10 years by now. But there is so much junk on their pages now, they take forever to load. It's irritating.
So yesterday I got particularly impatient, and started searching to see if they had a text-only site for accessibility (no they don't. Boo). And I found:
Amazon Wireless
OK, so it's designed for cell phones, but it's lightning-fast. Perfect. No one said you have to be using a cell phone to use a site designed for mobile access. In fact, I use a bunch of them, made into gadgets on my iGoogle page (this one puts me at 4 - Google calendar, LiveJournal, Facebook, and Amazon).
So, I hope this makes the day of someone who'd getting a little tired of Amazon's speed.

yes, I am a geek
Mar. 1st, 2008 09:41 amIf anyone here uses Gmail, and Firefox, I made a nice little tweak:
Gmail 2 fixed navigation
It makes the mailbox and labels list never scroll off the screen - very useful. If you have Stylish installed, it's written as a style. If you have Greasmonkey installed, you can also install it as a script.
I don't usually bother to post these little things I make, other than on the Geek page, but this one struck me as really nice to have, and with a pretty wide potential audience.

huh. I'm ... famous?
Feb. 23rd, 2007 11:05 amWell. I just got my Google newsletter for librarians. And my name was in it. The content, not the header. That was a little ... startling.
Google knows who I am! OK, that might be stretching it. Still.

help, I'm invisible again!
Jan. 29th, 2007 11:56 amFor some reason lately I decided I wanted to be findable with Google. So I did some updating of my page, and some linking around, and I was showing up (although, oddly, below my Amazon profile). Then, yesterday, the listing completely disappeared from the results. Well, from the first 100, at least.
Have I angered the Google gods? Should I just be patient and hope it shows up again?
I used to be the first result for both variations of my name - Deb Morrissey got you my main page, and Deborah Morrissey got you my resume. Then I had to go move everything. Not smart.

working computer
Oct. 4th, 2006 05:40 pmMy computer is back and working! So happy!
However, I am definitely going to need the dock for it at some point - though I need to remember the option of my compact USB keyboard when I'm on the couch and want to answer email or something (it's a slate - no built-in keyboard, and so far character recognition sucks).
Next, I need to see how to train the handwriting recognition. Tomorrow's my day off, so I guess I'll be working on that then.
After I finish at least one of the current library book stack next to the TV. Minimum.

tech support validation
Sep. 9th, 2006 11:11 pmI may not have mentioned that I bought a tablet computer - mostly because it had major problems. Finally sent it to tech support (again) this week after thoroughly discussing problem over phone. The message on my answering machine today indicates they agree with my assessment:
OK, then, I see it's doing the same thing for them that it was for me. Good. But I'm still amused that the official diagnosis was "bizarre."
I received your tablet and checked it out and the problem is ... bizarre.

i am so hopeless
Jul. 12th, 2006 04:43 pmGeekiest idea ever, and yet I am entranced:

Bloglines has finally fixed the moon phase feed from the Farmer's Almanac (it stopped updating for almost a year). So happy to see my moon reminder every morning.
wishlist data mining
Jan. 7th, 2006 10:49 amData Mining 101: Finding subversives with Amazon Wishlists
I'd be a little scared by the privacy implications, but I'm too fascinated. Plus, since you CAN make a wish list private, and they're voluntarily created documents anyway, I don't think privacy issues really apply. What do you think the actual name used was? Something pretty common - Michael, or William, or something like that, I'd think.
Incidentally, have you loked at the Amazon wish list feature recently? You can have multiple lists! With varying levels of privacy. And you can make shopping lists for other people ("oh, mom would love that book, I should mark it down for her birthday ...").
Can we say how much better I'm doing with my posting frequency this year?

Jan. 26th, 2004 05:37 pmEvidently, I am "hyperorganized." But only in certain areas. From this article:

But, how do you know which web sites are good if you don't save them?

cute program
Jul. 4th, 2003 08:19 amMy newest discovery is a little program run in the tray in Windows. I don't need the date like most people I know, no, I have the moonphase displayed there. It's cute. And I always know when it's the full moon. The one I found is by Robomagic, which has quite reasonable prices for its little utilities.
