Birthdays

Yesterday was probably the lowest-key birthday I've ever had. And I think I'm happy with that. I used to think I wanted a big party, just once, but right now that thought is utterly unappealing. Rich even asked if I wanted to go out for dinner, but I was perfectly happy for him to cook something at home and eat dinner in front of the TV, just the two of us.

The revelations of adulthood sometimes astound me.

Rich has asked me to marry him, and of course I said yes!

And now I want them to hurry up and resize my ring so I can start showing it off. It's actually my great-mother's - Rich got it from my mother. It's from 1914, very Art Nouveau (lots of filigree).

I have today off from work, so I'm enjoying being snuggled up on the couch with the cats and a book (well, as soon as I'm done here), watching the snow fall.

Snow is winter's only redeeming quality. I hate cold.

yay!

I indeed did not have to go to class last night. W00t!

And in further happy news, this morning I finally got my car back from the garage, with its brand new unscratched front bumper (yeah, I do a little bumping when I parallel park - that's what bumpers are for). So now I have a car I can play my Nomad in, I have my EZpass for the tolls back, and I can park in the garage at work again! (because of course I forgot to take both EZpass and parking permit out of the car when I left it).

The parking in the garage is no small matter. I work in Co-op City in the Bronx. Those of you in the NYC area have doubtless already heard about the parking crisis. For everyone else: Co-op City has 8 parking garages. They recently had to close 5 because they are so decrepit. This has created quite a parking crisis in the area, even with a couple of additional lots added and slanted parking spaces on some streets instead of parallel. I happen to own a parking permit for one of the 3 remaining garages, and boy it makes getting to work on time a lot easier.

Blackout!

I had a ball. Got to leave work an hour early, got home to discover Rich was asleep and completely unaware there was a blackout in our apartment, let alone, the entire Northeast. But of course, since he *was* asleep, the news was received with a simple "uh-huh."

And then our friend Karen upstairs stopped by with an invitation to join her and Dave for a cookout. A given, when you don't have a gas range and all the food in your fridge is warming up.

So the whole building cooked out, and sat there amazed at being able to see the stars, while being in the NY metro area. Unfortunately, by the time we put the candles out, I think Long Island was getting power back, because the sky seemed much lighter and I couldn't see as many stars.

And then I declared my intention of sleeping late this morning, and telling work I simply didn't have an alarm. But they called at 8:30 to tell me not to come in, anyway.

Just isn't summer without a good blackout, huh?

alone

Today I had the luxury of having the apartment to myself. Rich went to his Aunt Dee's house for the afternoon, and I have been gloriously alone since noon.

I'm reveling. I haven't been alone in months. I'm really looking forward to him taking a temp retail job, just so I can be alone more often.
