Is it so very hard to acknowlege that someone is human? If you want me to help you, could you, I don't know, say hello, and *ask* for help? Instead of plopping a piece of paper with a book title in front of me and expect me to intuit that you want to place a hold on it?

Even when a transaction is obvious (like putting a piece of merchandise in front of a store clerk), I try to acknowledge them as people, say something, and not treat them like an ATM. C'mon.

of the ritualized subjugation of "service employees" (yeah, i know we're professionals, but think the john q. public i always end up sitting next to on six hour plane flights in first class who always ends up asking me about all the things my "husband" must be paying for...) on the basis of social class amongst other things.

if you talk to "them", in the minds of these folks, it's exerting EFFORT. i mean aren't these people here to serve meeee meeee meeee meeee meee? *rolls eyes*

Yeah, maybe next time they'll tell me what they want.
