irony of the day

Today during my commute, I ended up behind a car with a bumper sticker that said: Save the Environment, Drive a Hybrid.

It was on a Lexus SUV.

Methinks someone is unclear on the concept.

Maybe their OTHER car was a hybrid?

Or some pro-environmentalist put the bumper sticker on their SUV as a protest move and the SUV'er was too lazy to take it off?

I have no clue. I was just behind it and didn't see it from the side. The model logo or whatever didn't give any indication of being a hybrid at any rate.

I guess maybe it wasn't as ironic as it looked at first glance.

But still - an SUV? Why not something people might know was a hybrid?

I drive an SUV hybrid because it gets better gas mileage than my old sedan and better mileage than any of the station wagons tht I was interested in. We wanted a diesel wagon so we could go bio, but there were none available in the U.S. in 2006. Also because when I'm stuck in traffic my engine turns off so I'm not polluting while I'm at a standstill.

I also do it because I _love_ driving SUV's and would have never done it before. I live in the land of SUV's and if you don't drive one it is very difficult to see. (which certainly doesn't make me need one, just means I like it for now.) It's a complete treat that I don't feel guilty about. I've also chosen to lease for only 3 years with the intent of trading in for a prius or a diesel or *crosses fingers* an electric as they are trickling out onto the market agian in the next few years.

Either way a hybrid is a step up and I'm happy to see anybody going in the right direction. Whether it's farther that I would go or nowhere near as close.

That's just my perspective though.

I have nothing against SUV hybrids - definitely a step up from even non-hybrid compacts! But having that bumper sticker on it seems pretty odd when most people are not going to realize that you are, in fact, driving a hybrid. I wouldn't have thought twice about it if not for the sticker.

I guess I can see driving an SUV if almost everyone else is just for visibility, but god, I hate driving big vehicles. Heck, my mom's Taurus drove me nuts, felt like a boat to me. I've always had compacts (usually a Corolla).

They might have been advertising it just because otherwise you wouldn't have noticed it was a hybrid. I know when I was reading the reviews on the Highlander Hybrid that it was one of the complaints of the reviewer. If he was going to spend some $6,000 more for a hybrid he wanted people to know it! heh.

Well, exactly. The whole idea of a hybrid SUV is still somewhat ironic.

I checked, the sticker MPG is 32/27 which is worse than my 1997 non-hybrid Honda Civic. It's kind of like getting a really-expensive air-freshener for an outhouse.

Why can't Lexus make a status symbol that gets 100mpg?

My old sedan was clearly not a Honda Civic. It was a crappy Nissan Sentra. And I totally agree about the MPGs on ALL cars. I mean Honda and Toyota put our teeny weenie cars (the go and the fit) and they crow about getting 40MPG! That's ridiculous! In my early 20's I had a Chevy Sprint that got 60/50MPG.

We totally have the technology to do better. Did either of you see Who Killed the Electric Car?

For Reals! (it was a three cylinder car) I got from Spokane, Wa to Portland, OR on one little tank of gas. I'm sure you couldn't find one now though. They became the GMC Sprint, which became the Chevy Aveo. When it became the Aveo they took the MPG down to 30, with the story that people were omplaining about the power of the car.(Even though I passed semi's, so whatever?)

That being said, I reaqd the specs and the power certainly didn't go up in ratio to the MPG going down.
